Butte College main campus has added new murals to two main campus buildings by two local artists, as part of an ongoing initiative from Butte College Associated Students to create a more vibrant and multicultural setting for students, faculty, and staff.
The Arts building features a mural painted by artist Wyatt Hersey, and is titled “The Butte College Village” measuring 38 feet wide at the bottom, and 30 feet wide at its top. “The overall feeling was meant to be one of community, inclusion, happiness, environmental wellbeing, and equity. It is my utopian vision of Butte College,” said Hersey.
Another mural has been added to the Life Science building and features work done by former Butte College instructor and artist, Dylan Tellesen. Titled "We Care About You," it measures eight feet high and 70 feet wide. “I encouraged participants to interject ideas of what Butte College means to them. After that process I continued to build the mural to include native wildlife; salmon from our waters, coyotes from our land, and turkey vultures from our air hold special meaning for me as they do for many others,“ said Tellesen.
The Butte College Associated Students have sponsored this ongoing mural project at Butte College, which is a continuation of the initial mural project started in 2019 that funded murals at the Chico Center and Glenn County Centers in 2020.
